The Blue Sari series began with this painting. I was looking for ways to situate the work and myself in a place. How do you fix a place? I decided to turn to local flora and fauna to map geography. The blue jays, acacias, and olive trees of my home state of California adorn the backdrop of this painting, while the figure floats in space. Do you assimilate? Or, do you become anew?

This painting is a late bloomer. It evolved in response to the news stories that were coming out of India--my country of birth--caught in the deathly grip of the second wave of Covid 19. Tales of greed, treachery, and an utter lack of respect for human life were haunting and troubling. Flowers and earthen pot serve as momento mori, as the sari floats in a ghostly form in its splendor.

This work was made in response to the news stories coming out of India after the second wave of coronavirus infections devastated the nation. The skull as momento mori is partially hidden behind the sari as the latter takes the form of a wave about to engulf all that is in its way.

How does the quotidian help us make sense of who we are? The daily things that adorn our lives are of endless fascination to me. The sari is featured with some objects from my personal collection—containers of memories—reminders of where I come from.

Wearing a sari seems almost ritualistic. I remember my mom would come back home from an outing and change from a formal sari to an informal one, before she busied herself with household chores—a practice unfathomable to me as someone who grew up in blue jeans. Can you imagine the maintenance?

Named after one of my daughter’s favorite books when she was an infant, the work is derived from several photographs: some from a family album and the others, staged. The scene is unreal, the story universal.
